First, a thin layer of gel is applied to the area that is about to be treated – this allows the maximum amount of light to enter the skin, ensuring the best possible results. Next, the Ellipse applicator is pressed onto the treatment area and the system will then release a controlled pulse of visible light.

This intense pulse of light is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in your hair. The melanin then turns the light into heat. The heat produced then moves down the hair and attacks the hair matrix, preventing further hair growth. Thanks to the patented Ellipse Dual Mode Filtering, potentially harmful wavelengths are removed ensuring that only the safe and required light reaches the pigment and hair matrix.

Can all hair types be treated?

The most effective results are seen when treating dark hair. This is because that the treatment works based on the absorption of the light by the melanin and there is less melanin in lighter colour hair such as blonde, grey or white. Ellipse works effectively on all skin colours and has different programme settings for skin tone and hair thickness.

    Is IPL painful?

Pain thresholds vary but the treatment procedure does not require any anesthetic creams. Most people describe the sensation as almost pain free or mildly uncomfortable. It has been likened to an elastic band snapping against the skin. Certainly less painful than waxing!

How many treatments will I need?

IPL is only effective on hairs that are growing. Therefore it is important to treat the hair at the right time within its lifecycle. All hair grows, falls out, rests and then grows again, so timing is crucial. Because age, hormones and other factors can affect the length and timing of the growth cycle, results can vary. Typically results are seen within 3 – 6 treatments, with treatments taking place at 1 – 3 month intervals.

How long does each treatment take?

The treatment time will vary depending on the size of the area to be treated and the thickness of the hair. For example, a top lip treatment may take just 5 minutes, whereas a back or both legs could take 20 – 30 minutes.

How do I prepare for an Ellipse IPL treatment?

You will need to stop waxing, tweezing or using any hair removal creams 4 weeks prior to your first treatment. Hair must only be shaved. This helps the maximum amount of hair follicles to contain a hair and therefore be targeted by the laser. You should also refrain from tanning (sun, solarium, professional or self-tanning) for 4 weeks before and during your treatment period. If your skin is tanned, then the tanned skin will absorb the light rather than the melanin in the hair. This will cause the treatment to be less effective.

Is Ellipse IPL safe and effective?

Ellipse IPL has been in use for over 15 years. Clinical trials were carried out by medical professionals prior to the product reaching the market. Since then, a 10 year follow-up study has been completed to prove long-term effectiveness. For more information regarding Ellipse products and their research, please visit www.ellipseipl.co.uk

    Laser Removal of Unwanted Hair

Practically pain free SWT laser hair removal with documented long-term results

Excess hair may be the result of medical conditions, but the pressure to remove it may be cosmetic.
Cultural norms and peer group pressure often require the removal of hair in certain regions such as the face, axillae (armpits), legs and bikini line for women and the chest and back for men.

How does the Ellipse SWT laser hair removal treatment work?

To achieve long lasting or permanent hair removal, it is necessary to destroy the hair follicle from which individual hairs grow. Controlled pulses of light penetrate the epidermis and are absorbed by melanin in the hair contained in the follicle.
Melanin converts the light energy into heat. This heat is transferred to the hair follicle, which is destroyed, making it unable to produce a new hair. Hair in the resting (telogen stage) are treated later. The treatment is only effective on growing hairs as these are still attached to the follicle.
This technique is called “Selective Photothermolysis”.

The visible light produced by Ellipse SWT and laser systems is carefully controlled to ensure the correct pulse length, wavelengths and right amount of energy to destroy the follicle.

    Skin Rejuvenation

How does the Ellipse SWT photo rejuvenation treatment work?

The Ellipse Selective Waveband Technology treatment works by directing well-controlled pulses of light into the upper skin layer. The light is absorbed by two of the body’s own natural chemicals – melanin in the pigmented areas and haemoglobin in the red blood cells.
Both these pigments convert the light energy into heat. This heat is used to destroy the parts of the cells in which the melanin is stored, and to damage the walls of the vessels supplying blood to the areas where vascular damage is seen. This technique is called “Selective Photothermolysis”.
The visible light produced by the Ellipse SWT system is carefully controlled to produce the correct pulse length and right amount of energy to destroy the targets without damaging surrounding tissue.
The Ellipse SWT photo rejuvenation treatment will additionally treat larger telangiectasias (individually visible vessels).
Photo rejuvenation is a quick and simple treatment that does not interfere with your normal daily routine, repairing sun-damage found on the face, neck, chest and hands.

    Vascular Lesions

Remove many types of vascular lesions such as telangiectasias, hemangiomas and Port Wine Stains

A large number of men and women all over the world suffer from disorders of the blood vessels (vascular lesions). These can be of various types, from small telangiectasias (sometimes called spider veins or broken veins) to large Port Wine Stains.

How does the Ellipse SWT vascular lesion treatment work?

The Ellipse Selective Waveband Technology treatment works by directing well controlled pulses of light into the upper skin. The light is absorbed by one of the body’s own natural substances – haemoglobin – contained in the red blood cells.
Haemoglobin converts the light energy into heat. This heat is transferred to the walls of the blood vessels, which are permanently damaged and removed by the body’s own defence mechanism. The method of converting light to heat and using it to destroy the target without damaging the surrounding tissue is called Selective Photothermolysis.
The visible light produced by the Ellipse SWT systems is carefully controlled to produce the correct pulse length and right amount of energy to destroy the vessel. Best results are obtained on patients who have light to medium skin.

    Pigmented Lesions

Remove benign epidermal pigmented lesions quickly and gently

Benign pigmented lesions may be genetic in origin or may be caused by physical damage such as sunburn or injury, as well as the natural effect of ageing. The lesions can vary in size and colour. It is always important to ensure that the lesion is not malignant before removing it.

How does the Ellipse SWT pigmented lesion treatment work?

Ellipse treatment works by directing pulses of light into the epidermis. The light is absorbed by melanin, which is concentrated in the pigmented lesions.
Melanin converts the light energy into heat. This heat is used to destroy the keratinocatos in which the melanin is stored. This technique is called “Selective Photothermolysis”.
The visible light produced by the Ellipse systems is carefully controlled to produce the correct pulse length and wavelengths energy to destroy the target without damaging surrounding tissue.

    Acne Vulgaris

Acne occurs when sebum is unable to leave the skin because a hair follicle is blocked. This may result in growth of bacteria below the surface of the skin. Inflammation can occur, and rupture of an inflamed area can lead to scarring.

Ellipse Selective Waveband Technology and laser systems work by reducing the blood supply to the sebaceous gland, which slows down production of sebum and accelerate the healing process for acne.

Ellipse Selective Waveband Technology laser treatment following use of prescription medication has been clinically proven to accelerate the healing process for acne.

How does the Ellipse SWT treatment work on acne?

The Ellipse treatment works by directing pulses of light into the epidermis. The light is absorbed by the haemoglobin in the blood vessels that feed the sebaceous glands.

Haemoglobin converts the light energy into heat, which damages the walls of the vessels supplying blood to the glands. This technique is called “Selective Photothermolysis”.

The visible light produced by the Ellipse Selective Waveband Technology systems is carefully controlled to produce the correct pulse length and wavelengths to reduce the acne without damaging the surrounding tissue.

    How acne develops

A normal hair and sebaceous gland (1) can become partially blocked (2). Acnes bacteria live on the sebum and produce fatty acids. The body responds by blocking the gland’s exit to the skin (3). Sometimes the mixture of hair protein, oil and fatty acids damages the walls of the follicle and causes inflammation (4). The Ellipse SWT treatment works by reducing the blood supply to the sebaceous gland, which slows down production of sebum.
