Obagi for Hyperpigmentation

Pigmentation is the natural colouration of the skin. It is produced by the pigment – melanin. Skin can be prone to hyperpigmentation – dark spots and discolouration, and hypopigmentation – white spots and loss of colour.

Hyperpigmentation is a common skin concern, often caused by sun damage, hormones, medicines and other factors. In some cases it can be sympomatic of another medical condition. Whilst in most cases, hyperpigmentation isn’t harmful, it can be unsightly and cause people to be unhappy with their complexion.

These before and after pictures show how Obagi has been used to treat hyperpigmentation. Our very own Claire Mead, who puts everything the spa offers to the test before recommending it, achieved these incredible results.

At The Mulberry Spa, we offer free of charge consultations with Claire Mead to enable a bespoke prescription skincare programme to be designed, with a view to improve hyperpigmentation in the short term and long term.

These pharmaceutical grade products cannot be purchased for home use without a professional consultation. The recommended programme may include some professional treatments to achieve optimum results.

Results are monitored and your programme can be adapted in line with the needs of your skin.

Hyperpigmentation is caused by an excess of melanin and can present itself in different forms, including:

Melasma

Melasma is believed to be caused by hormonal changes and can develop during pregnancy. Hyperpigmentation may appear on any part of the body, but generally on the face and stomach.

Sun Spots

Sun spots are very common. They are also known as liver spots or solar lentigines. They are caused by exposure to the sun over time and therefore appear most commonly on the hands and face.

Post-inflammatory Hyperpigmentation

This type of hyperpigmentation occurs as a result of injury or inflammation to the skin. A common cause is acne.

Obagi for Acne

Acne is a frustrating skin condition often associated with spots, pimples, whiteheads, blackheads, breakouts and greasy skin. Acne is also prone to leaving scars.

There are many causes of acne, including:

Hormones

Puberty, premenstrual flare, disorders with high testosterone levels, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, anabolic steroids and oral steroids can all cause acne. It is common during teenage years but often affects women during pregnancy too.

Oils

If your skin comes into contact with certain oils or contaminants, they can cause acne breakouts. These might be through your occupation or through cosmetics applied to the skin.

Stress

The sebum glands in the skin see an increase in activity during periods of stress, which can directly affect the health of your skin.

The Obagi CLENZIderm Skincare System

Obagi CLENZIderm provides a three-step acne treatment with clinically proven ingredients that penetrate deep into the skin’s layers. The aim is to control acne for a clearer, healthier-looking complexion.

The CLENZIderm system  includes unique formulations including the active ingredients benzoyl peroxide (BPO) and salicylic acid, which penetrate deep into the dermis and target acne where it forms.
